Responsibility in Legislation

We support legislation that positively influences the responsible consumption of alcohol in our communities.

We’re behind measures aimed at getting new drivers off to good starts and keeping drunk drivers off the road. We support the passage of laws targeting driver education; graduated licensing and zero tolerance for teen drivers; license revocation; and other sensible measures. We also support legislation prohibiting and penalizing the serving, giving or selling of alcohol beverages to minors.

Our Public Policy Approach

In statehouses and communities across America as well as in the nation’s capitol, our approach is simple: We support measures to ensure that alcohol isn’t sold to, possessed by or consumed by underage people.

MillerCoors played a leadership role in passage of the Sober Truth on Preventing Underage Drinking Act (STOP Act). This groundbreaking bipartisan legislation addresses the issue of underage drinking and provides a long-term policy framework and funding for programs and initiatives aimed at preventing it. MillerCoors continues to support funding for this important initiative.

In addition, we support legislation that prohibits and/or penalizes:

 * The serving, giving or selling of alcohol beverages to minors
 * The manufacture, possession or use of false identification to obtain alcohol beverages
 * The purchase or attempt to purchase, possess or consume alcohol beverages by underage people

We also support:

 * State legislation prohibiting driving under the influence of alcohol and such public policy efforts as graduated drivers' licensing systems, graduated penalties for multiple offenses, and stiffer penalties for repeat offenders
 * Stricter regulation of Internet, mail-order and telephone sales of alcohol beverages to avoid underage procurement

Our Record

We have historically taken a leadership role in organizing and coordinating broad coalitions of advocacy groups, trade and professional organizations, law enforcement and labor to champion the passage of tough drunk-driving laws. Under the “Tough Laws, Safe Roads” banner, we have participated in or led coalitions that helped see such laws passed in several states, including Wisconsin, Georgia, Illinois and Florida.
