Water Use and Preservation

Without clean water, we couldn’t make great beer. Water is our legacy, our heritage, and a core ingredient of our brands.

Our water use and preservation programs focus on several areas. We’re protecting watersheds where we make our beer. We’re setting targets to reduce the water used to make each barrel of beer. We’re identifying new ways to reuse wastewater. And we’re helping with water conservation causes.

Watershed Protection

We’re partnering with stakeholders on conservation projects in watersheds where we operate. Our projects allow us to learn more about watersheds and environmental practices that affect them, and to reduce the impact of our day-to-day operations. We evaluate risks and opportunities associated with water requirements, availability and quality issues. We’re also working to manage wastewater responsibly, and to reuse water wherever possible.

Water Use Reduction

We’ve set more stringent targets for the amount of water we use to produce beer, and at the same time we’re making capital improvements at breweries to reduce the amount of water we use. To encourage and empower our employees to save water, we’ve formed energy- and water-reduction teams at our breweries. Finally, we’re identifying new ways to reuse wastewater in cooling towers and in the irrigation of crops and facility landscaping.

World Class Manufacturing

World Class Manufacturing encourages a culture of continuous improvement and accountability, giving teams of employees the practices, principles and power to find ways to make all our manufacturing operations more efficient. WCM empowers our people to work toward a common goal of greater sustainability, and one of the many benefits of this work is a measurable reduction in the amount of water we use.

The United Nations CEO Water Mandate

We’re a founding signatory of the United Nations CEO Water Mandate. Through this voluntary initiative, companies commit to becoming more water-efficient, working with suppliers to improve their water efficiency, entering into dialogue with local communities, and transparently reporting progress on water. All these areas fit well with our ongoing water programs.

Supporting Brewery Community Sustainability

As a major consumer of water in our communities, we recognize our responsibility for water issues. We willingly join our civic leaders in this challenge. In Georgia, Texas, Ohio, Wisconsin, Virginia and Colorado we consistently serve as partners on water issues, fund groundwater protection initiatives, host water summits and act as public advocates for the conservation and smart use of our most precious resource.
