Supplier Diversity at MillerCoors

Supplier Diversity

“While being respectful of cultural differences, MillerCoors expects their primary suppliers to provide development of equal opportunities without discrimination on the grounds of race, religion, gender or any other arbitrary means.” – MillerCoors Supplier Code of Conduct

Relationships with Diverse Suppliers

MillerCoors is dedicated to working with suppliers who are as diverse as our consumers. In 2011, we engaged nearly 600 minority- and woman-owned suppliers to provide essential products and services. We spent a total of $448 million with diverse suppliers, or 8.8 percent of our total supplier spend. Since 2009, we spent a total of $1.27 billion with minority- and woman-owned businesses.

Supplier Diversity Management System

At MillerCoors, we give minority- and woman-owned businesses an opportunity to compete with other suppliers in the marketplace. We use a supplier diversity management system for minority- and woman-owned businesses, inviting them to complete a profile on the system. When supplier business opportunities arise, MillerCoors sourcing managers use the database to search for qualified minority- or woman-owned businesses. Registration in this database does not guarantee business with MillerCoors.

Second-Tier Supplier Diversity

MillerCoors is focused on strengthening our second-tier supplier diversity program and asks first-tier suppliers to join in this economic development initiative by meeting mutually agreed upon goals for spend with minority- or woman-owned businesses.

We collaborate with our first-tier suppliers for contracting with minority- and woman-owned businesses by conducting educational meetings regarding supplier diversity, introducing minority- and woman-owned businesses to prime suppliers and co-presenting at events where minority and woman-owned businesses are present. We currently have approximately 50 suppliers who report second-tier spend on a quarterly basis in our supplier diversity management system. Second-tier spend comprises 20 percent of our total spend with minority- and woman-owned businesses, and it is an important factor for consideration in our supplier of the year award.

Diverse Supplier of the Year: Raven Transport

We congratulate Raven Transport, winner of the MillerCoors 2011 Diverse Supplier of the Year award. Raven Transport is a minority-owned business that distributes our beers through its fleet of tractor-trailers. Because bottled beer is heavy, we typically cannot fill trailers to capacity without exceeding federal weight limits. As part of an experimental heavy haul program, we teamed with Raven Transport to load more bottled beer into trailers to reduce truck trips, lessen emissions, decrease impacts to roadways and cut fuel costs. We appreciate Raven Transport’s work in helping reduce the environmental impacts and costs of distributing our beers.

Involvement in Organizations for Supplier Diversity

MillerCoors engages with national organizations supporting supplier diversity. In 2011, we sponsored, coordinated and participated in more than 20 diverse supplier events, hosted supplier diversity professionals roundtable events with five suppliers and participated as speakers or panelists at six conferences.

We hold board of director positions and are actively involved with local and national organizations supporting supplier diversity. We are members of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), the largest nonprofit organization involved in minority supplier development, and nine regional affiliates. Our vice president of procurement is on the NMSDC’s board of directors. Our director of procurement is on the board of directors for the Rocky Mountain Minority Supplier Development Council (RMMSDC), a regional council supporting the development of minority-owned businesses in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and New Mexico. We are corporate members of the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility, an organization representing 16 national Hispanic organizations focused on the inclusion of Hispanics in business. We are active members of the Conference Board’s Supplier Diversity Leadership Council, which supports the expansion of diversity in supply chains. Through these groups, we foster relationships with first- and second-tier suppliers with the goal of increasing spend with minority- and woman-owned businesses.

We congratulate our director of strategic sourcing for receiving 2011 Advocate of the Year from the RMMSDC. RMMSDC also nominated MillerCoors for the 2011 Corporation of the Year award in recognition of our commitment to minority business development. For the second year in a row, we were one of 35 outstanding corporations inducted into the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s Million Dollar Club, an honor for companies who have demonstrated support for Hispanic businesses by spending a minimum of $25 million with Hispanic suppliers.
